STÉPHANIE FILION
Biography
Stéphanie Filion was born in 1975. After studying French Literature and completing a Master's degree on the works of Serge Doubrovsky, she took a brief hiatus from the literary world to start her family. This interlude gave her an opportunity to delve into everyday life and isolation, themes frequently addressed in her work.
As a finalist of the CBC/Radio-Canada Literary Awards in 2007, she became reacquainted with writing. She recently published articles in the magazines Virages, Jet d'encre, Zinc, and XYZ.
She is preparing another project in cooperation with Isabelle Décarie, a Canadian author residing in Brazil, entitled L'Almanach des exils, which examines the issues of space, friendship, and everyday occurrences.
Artistic Approach
"I enjoy focusing on a detail, analyzing it, and painting a picture of it by combining mystery with meticulous description. I like to push the boundaries of realism. At times, I hover on the cusp of fantasy, a place where the character's uncertainty can be passed on to the reader.
My short stories deal with isolation and closed worlds (captivity, passiveness, suffocation, obsessive memory, or cocoons). I explore characters--mostly women--who are grappling with daily lives that are seemingly carefully programmed, but that veer gently off course and topple over into the strange and unexpected.
I am recapturing the intimist work done in L'Almanach des exils, but this time, injecting a dose of magical realism into the contradictory emotions of the women depicted."
Comments of the Canadian Jury
"A subtle and inspired text that is very rhythmic, evocative, and familiar."
"Like emotionally gripping poetry. Good command of the language."
