SARAH BECK

Biography

Sarah Beck

In 1998, Sarah Beck received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Ryerson University.

In August 2001, she launched ODE at the Third Avenue Gallery in Vancouver, which continues to tour various galleries throughout North America.

In 2003, Sarah was invited to the Banff Arts Centre to study model building, where she took the opportunity to begin working with new materials.

In 2004, she was awarded the Joseph F. Stauffer prize, which “encourages young Canadians of outstanding promise or potential.” That same year, she moved to Saskatoon to focus on her newest project: a conceptual work about sweatshops and children entitled MOTHER.

Currently, Sarah is studying for her Master’s degree at the Ontario College of Art and Design.

Artistic Approach

Through her art, Sarah acts as a social barometer and cultural activist. With a focus on her relationship with consumer culture, she has used the tools of lifestyle advertising to make her work accessible to a wider audience.

“Through art, I am able to tackle what I feel is important to talk about. I strive to make my work accessible, allowing the message to determine the means through which I will express myself. I am influenced by the culture within me.

My work hinges on a search to confront the things that I feel require examination and even education in our society and individual lives as citizens.”

Comments of the Canadian Jury

“A well-constructed artistic approach, well executed with a great deal of subtlety.”
