GENEVIÈVE THAUVETTE
Biography
Geneviève studied Studio Arts at Concordia University in Montréal and earned a degree in Photography from Algonquin College in 2007. That same year, she had her first solo exhibition at the Atomic Rooster Bistro and was rewarded with excellent reviews.
In the fall of 2008, she had her second showing, this time at Ottawa’s Dale Smith Gallery for Festival X. Her work was described as “act one in a promising career.” Currently, Geneviève is represented by Ottawa’s Dale Smith Gallery.
Artistic Approach
Born in the rural outskirts of Ottawa, Geneviève Thauvette desperately sought a way to escape from the boredom of her everyday life. Her father, an amateur photographer, encouraged her to develop her talents in singing and composition.
However, she soon realized that, like her father, she secretly enjoyed escaping from her everyday existence through her camera lens—escaping from the neverending “day in, day out” routine, while daring to have fun with a reality that sometimes can sometimes wear you down.
Although Geneviève is still in the very early stages of her artistic journey, it is easy to appreciate the little photographic tales that have long been maturing in her imagination.
Sexuality and women are often the theme of her images, which are dramatic, even theatrical, and almost always include her chosen trademark: a round paper lace doily.
Comments of the Canadian Jury
