Literature Finals : Special Mention
October 4, 2009 - At the award ceremony for the short story competition yesterday, the jury awarded a special mention to two candidates from Canada: Stéphanie Filion of Team Canada and Valérie Forgues of Team Canada-Québec.
"I am very pleased. The standards in literature were quite high and the jury's choices didn't really surprise me, because the texts were outstanding. So getting a special mention is an honour for me," said Stephanie.
Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to the candidates from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, and Burundi, respectively.
"Canada and Quebec presented excellent texts, but they were perhaps too intimate for this kind of competition, in which the jury was more receptive to broader themes involving human suffering," said Lebanese writer Alexandre Najjar, the president of the jury.
Notes and observations written by the five jury members will be given to all candidates, whose texts will be published.
