Canada and TV5, a partnership at the service of La Francophonie

Facts

The Government of Canada is proud to be a part of the successes of TV5 for more than 20 years. This network helps promote the Canadian Francophonie and culture across the country and around the world.

Through the coordinated effort and funding provided by five governments--France, Switzerland, the Francophone community of Belgium, Canada and Quebec--the network has shown remarkable growth since it was first created in 1984.

Today TV5 is one of the greatest accomplishments of La Francophonie and has become the world's largest French-language television network. It is broadcasted in over 200 countries and territories and it reaches more than 200 million households worldwide, including about 6.6 million Canadian households. The network broadcasts many Canadian programs such as Le Téléjournal de Radio-Canada, Une heure sur terre, Tout sur moi and Le Code Chastenay.

TV5's programming is general and multinational in nature, aggregating programs from across La Francophonie and its various broadcasting partners such as France Télévisions, ARTE France, Radio Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française, Télévision suisse romande, Société Radio-Canada, Télé-Québec and the Conseil international des radios-télévisions d'expression française. The programming contributes to achieving the objectives of UNESO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The network is managed by two operators: TV5 Monde, in Paris, is responsible for the signal in Europe, Africa, Asia, the United States, Latin America and the Middle East; TV5 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is responsible for the signal in Canada.

In 2009, the Government of Canada increased its funding to TV5Monde and TV5 Québec Canada by $5 million per year to help the network succeed in today's technological environment and to expand its distribution through various platforms. Through Canada's contribution to TV5, all Canadians can benefit from a unique French-language channel that showcases the richness and vitality of the Canadian and international Francophonie.

The funding provided by the Government of Canada for TV5 also supports the development of the Francophone audiovisual industry in Quebec and across the country.
