Vacationing here in Florida when I saw the disturbing news on my website. My heart sank. Canadians should be so proud of a truly dedicated Canadian who took bold and correct steps to rescue the economy on 2008 and forward. Mr Flaherty has single handedly kept our standard of living at the high status we have had and still have. I know our USA friends have the utmost respect for him and the way he managed our economy in Canada. I wish I had a dollar for evertime I have heard from them how they wished he could govern their finances compared to the "expertise" they are getting from their government. Jim was a devoted parliamentaian both in the Ontario and in the National legislature. Men like Mr Flarhety dont come along that often in life and as a retired 68 yr old, his service to Canada was much appreciated. His love and concern for the country was always front and centre. His passing is an terrible loss for all Canadians irrespective of political persuasion. God Bless Jim and family. Respectfully submitted, Paul and Anne Brayman Oakville, Ontario

I met Jim Flaherty once when he was in Ottawa campaigning to succeed Mike Harris as Ontario premier. I remember his affability, approachability and fun. Ontario's loss turned out to be Canada's gain. My condolences that he was taken from his family just as he was to embark on a new chapter in his life after tireless and above competent work not just for Canada's but for the World's financial recovery.

It has been an untimely shock to the Nation! He was an honest, responsible person, and worked extremely hard to help the Canadian people by his financial policies, and make Canada known throughout the world with his policies. I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to the family of the Honourable Jim Flaherty. He was very dedicated to his country and the wonderful work he did for Canada on the world stage by making us a country of envy during turbulent times. Words cannot replace the empty sadness that fills the void of his passing. As a Canadian, I am sorry that he did not have the well deserved opportunity to enjoy his retirement with his family that he held in such high regard.

Thank you for all your hard work on behalf of Canadians, coast to coast, Mr. Flaherty. You will be sorely missed. As a politician, you were a rare public servant who was capable of working on both sides of the aisle. As a finance minister, you were adroit at keeping this country's economic momentum moving. May you rest in Him and may His peace be upon your loved ones during this sad time.

I never met you, but felt I knew you from seeing you many times on TV. You know each time I saw my OAS and CPP deposits in my bank account I would always say “thanks Jim”. Why I said that I could never explain, other than the profound affect you had on me as I watched you manage Canada’s finances through some very, very tough times and back into balanced books. What better legacy for you to leave as an example for us all to follow. And now sadly you will not receive your OAS and CPP payments that you fought so hard to preserve, amid all the criticism for deficit financing which was the only way you could manage our social programs at that time. To all your family I send my sincere sympathy and hope when the shock and grief subsides, that all the beautiful memories of Jim that you made together will bring you hope and joy always. Canada has lost a truly great man in every respect. Well done good and faithful servant! Brian Crombleholme – Victoria, BC

To Mrs. Flaherty, John, Quinn and Galen: I wish to offer my sincere condolences on the passing of Jim. It seems so natural to call him by his first name even though I never met the man. He was a genuine guy who everybody respected and liked. I had a chance to shake his hand once at Pearson, but didn't want to disturb him. I wish I had....he was a spectacular Canadian, fabulous minister and one of the best ambassadors this country has ever had. I hope you will take comfort knowing his impact on all Canadians was positive and appreciated. He will be long remembered as one of the good ones who left us decades too soon.

Mr. Flaherty - Thank you for your public service and thank you to your family for having to endure your absences while you performed that service. Thank you for recognizing the need for actions even when they were contrary to your fiscal vision and finally thank you for your honesty concerning the benefit to the country for income splitting. You, sir, are the finest example of what a politician should be. I am truly sorry that you were not able to enjoy a prosperous and restful life after politics, but I guess some people were just meant to serve. My sincerest condolences to Christine, Quinn, Galen and John. You were truly a giant among men.

Jim Flaherty was a solid anchor for our country's financial health during the worst recession since the 1930's. He showed vision, flexibility and toughness in the face of adversity. He worked to ensure that Canadians would not suffer the same fate as Americans when mortgage rates inevitably go up again. He labored long and hard, possibly to the detriment of his health Since he passed away, his spirit of self sacrifice and care for the disabled has been reported. He himself never commented in public on his activities to support the disabled -- just one more facet of a man we shall all miss in the future. Condolences to his wife and family, I hope you will be comforted by his service, his humanity, his humour. We share in your loss. Thanks Jim, you are an inspiration to all of us, rest in peace with a job well done.

I wish to send my thoughts and prayers to Mr. Flaherty's family. It was so sad to hear of his passing so suddenly and so quickly after his retirement. He was one of our very best Finance Ministers and I so admired how he handled the recession in Canada over the past years. He was honest and true to his word. I sincerely hope that whomever follows him will remember the type of person he was. There is so little faith in our politicians now and it's so sad to lose someone we trusted to much. May God bless his family and may they feel comfort knowing where Mr. Flaherty will be.
Hope Cheatle

2014-04-14
Mr Flaherty projected an affable humanity and genuine warmth too often lacking in politics. His championing of the disabled was a shining moment of real policy for real people. He also seemed to rise above partisanship to show genuine respect for persons with different political philosophy than his own party's. Canada has lost a truly good citizen. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences, to Mr. Flaherty's wife and sons, and his extended family. I had the privilege of supporting "Jim" during his Whitby/ Oshawa campaigns and drove a few of his election signs into the ground on his behalf. He was a breath of fresh air , when it came to politicians. What a nice, genuine, appreciative man. No pretence, just a nice genuine man. I look back and think of how lucky we were to have him representing us in this riding. He truly was Whitby, Ontario, Canada proud. He will be greatly missed by us all.

My wife, Shirley, and I wish to express our most profound condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Flaherty. His passing is truly tragic and we feel so sad. I am Mr. Flaherty's age and think of myself as young and full of vitality. To think that he so richly deserved to enjoy his life after a career of superb public service and rock steady leadership is also numbing now. His example will last into history as we were all so strengthened by his presence throughout the past many years that he manned the helm of our financial life in Canada. He set the standard for responsible, proper management of our countries fortunes at the time that the entire world was struggling to escape the quagmire that the global economic system had become. He was looked at as the captain of the only fiscal system that protected us from the ravages that had crippled other the economies of other countries. We owe him the sincerest debt of gratitude. His personality and brilliance transcended crass political behaviours of lesser people and we must aspire to emulate his example as the future unfolds for us who continue on after him. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Jim Flaherty.

2014-04-14
Rest in Peace Mr. Flaherty Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free! I follow the plan God laid for me. I saw His face, I heard His call, I took His hand and left it all... I could not stay another day, To love, to laugh, to work or play; Tasks left undone must stay that way. And if my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss... Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss. My life's been full, I've savoured much: Good times, good friends, a loved-one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief— Don't shorten yours with undue grief. Be not burdened with tears of sorrow, Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow

I may have disagreed with Mr. Flaherty on many things, but I was still angered and saddened to hear of his passing. I was angered because he deserved more time than he received. A great and superb Canadian who served his country and Ontario in a supreme fashion. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND GIVE YOU PEACE. Jim's policies and those of our Conservative government are what got Canada through the 2008 financial crisis better than any other country in the world, USA included and they kept us on a productive path. Thank you Mr. Flaherty! You did a great job and made us a model for the world. It wasn't easy as is demonstrated by your early demise. We are saddened you were not able to enjoy your time away from being Finance Minister and golf in the emerald isle as planned. Gone far too soon. May your family know that we all care and appreciate what you accomplished in your political life on our behalf. We're better for having you represent us. Canada lost a truly good son named Jim Flaherty... Canada's Irish Catholic son is now with God and joining the kitchen party of Rita MacNeil, Stompin Tom, Johnny Cash, Waylon, Janis, Jimi, Keith Whitley and so many other greats.... We know God thinks Canadians are 2 saucy, but He does so love the Irish. In seriously... as an old Nova Scotian... the world was in horror and absolute fear when USA's greed destroyed our financial world back in 2008- and u saved us... with grace, intelligence, dignity and Canadian spirit. So many everyday folks of Canada likened u 2 that favourite cousin that always makes us laugh and smile... in the hardest and easiest of time. God is lucky Irish Canadian son... God is lucky. hugs and love -old momma nova

We were so saddened to hear of the passing of a great Canadian, Jim Flaherty. He was truly concerned of the financial welfare of all Canadians. If not for Mr Flaherty, our country would be in a worse financial mess after the crisis of 2008. It was Mr Flaherty Canadians voted for and his tight control of the finances of Canada, not Mr Harper. My sincere and hearflt condolences to Christine Elliott and her family for their unexpected and tragic loss. Nothing can remove the sorrow of the premature passing of a beloved hiusband and father, but I hope that the multitudinous accolades and expressions of sympathy will help just a little. Minister Flaherty will be remembered as a great parliamentarian, one of the best in the history of this country. His steady hand and thoughtful leadership during the financial crisis that started in 2008 that helped this country so much, and his deep concern for the well-being of all Canadians will be his enormous legacy. Jim was a politician, as many were. He worked hard even though it sucks the life out of you, without any tangible reward. He will be remembered by many conservatives as loyal and hardworking.

We are saddened by the unexpected passing of Mr. Flaherty. We believe Mr. Flaherty steered us through very turbulent times. It must have been extremely difficult on him and his family during the past 8 years. We, as are millions of Canadians and even more people around the world, benefited from his sage fiscal wisdom and stewardship. He truly was an international fiscal giant. I've been involved in interested in politics from an extremely young age. When kids where playing basketball and soccer I was following the recession of 2008. From one of the darkest day in recent Canadian came a leader a man with a mission; a mission to fix the economy. That man was the Late Honorable Jim Flahery. Since the beginning of the recession I was disappointed with Harper and his government then came Hon. Jim Flaherty. Back then I was a supporter of the Liberals. Stéphane Dion was a huge inspiration to me and admired the man. As time went one I became a supporter of Jack Layton and his NDP opposition. He regretfully passed away. The NDP was never the same without him. I grew a distaste for most of the Conservative party. Thursday April 10th 2014 I read the news shortly after leaving class that Mr. Flaherty passed away. I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that the death of a Conservative would hit me so hard. Jim was a leader and inspiration not just to me but to a large amount of Canadians. Him alongside Jack Layton are people I look up to and someday hope to be like. Jim inspirited me to make the best out of even the darkest situations. I am 14 now and hope to have the opportunity to lead our country just like Jim and Jack did. With a heavy heart I express my deepest regrets and condolences. The Honorable Jim Flaherty will forever have a place in the hearts of Canadians, he has left a lasting mark on Canada and will forever be honored and remembered. Now we must set our political views and distastes aside to honor a man who has done so much for us. Rest In Peace Jim Flaherty.

Many years have since gone by and your passing is nothing short of a shock and untimely. May you rest in heavenly peace. Peter

Mr. Flaherty took the time to send a very detailed explanation of the economic situation with the EU and it was very thoughtful of him, and exemplary for a Minister of Finance to go to the lengths that he did. He led the country's finances through a most difficult time in our history. He will be greatly missed. Sincere sympathy to his family and friends. Words can not do justice when the loss is so great.

I wrote an on-line note to Mr. Flaherty last year expressing my concerns about finances for retired persons. To my surprise, I received a two page letter in the mail and signed by Mr. Flaherty. I didn't expect a formal letter from the Minister, but he took the time to have it sent to me. I was, and am, honoured to know that this man took the time to send a formal reply to my concerns. He was a good Minister of Finance. Taken too soon. God love him. My deepest sympathy. John Dennis Napanee, Ontario

But we know, that like a candle their lovely light will surely shine to brighten up another place more perfect...more divine. And in the realm of Heaven where they shine so warm and bright our beloved ones live forevermore in God's eternal light." May the blessing of light be on you— light without and light within. Jim Flaherty was one of the most encouraging persons to those of us who deal with severe disabilities and stigmatization. His spirit and fiery patriotism will never be extinguished, he lives on forever in the hearts and souls of those whom he gave his very best to, safeguarding and protecting through his expressions, his ideological stance and policies in which he believed in. I wish I had been given the opportunity to meet Jim Flaherty, but it never happened. He has been such a positive influence in such times of duress. He seemed so balanced, soulful, considerate and caring, while being tough as nails and dedicated to true principles rather than lies guised and sold to manipulate and undermine the meek. It is so unfair and so pathetic that he has been stolen away from his family and from our nation. What a powerful soul, so unwavering and loyal to natural law written in his heart, and to the statute laws on which Canada is founded. That being: Opportunity, Hope and Respect for all Canadians equally through and through. While pushing for reduced taxes, encouraging true/real competition to foster innovation and commerce as a true Capitalist will always do. If I ever get a chance to dedicate a dance, Jim Flaherty will be in my heart and soul, and my minds eye too. LEST WE FORGET, Jim Flaherty served and protected as real men with soul do.

Our sincere condolences are extended to the Flaherty family. Although we have not met, we feel a deep sadness in his passing. Jim was indeed a great Finance Minister but more importantly, he was an honest man. He made us proud to be Canadian. He will be missed.

Like Tim Russert in the US---Mr. Flaherty had the very rare power of being able to project an honesty of character and a feeling of genuine compassion---even through a television screen. Never met the gentleman but know Canada is the lesser for the loss of his presence.

My deepest and sincerest sympathies to Mr. Flaherty's wife and children. They have lost a wonderful husband and father. Mr. Flaherty, in my mind, was the consummate public service, totally dedicated to the Canadian people. He was the best Finance Minister this country has ever had. His death was sudden and shocking - most unbelievable. May his family, friends and colleagues find peace in knowing that he is no longer suffering, but rather, he has slipped the surly bonds of earth, reached out and touched the face of God. He is wrapped in the arms of the angels and will look down and protect and guide his sons and his wife. My prayers of comfort and courage are with you. God Bless.

Our condolences are with the Flaherty family. Jim has sacrificed so very much for his province, and for his country. He was on the cusp of returning to the private life, where he could continue to follow his passions and spend more time with his family. It is most unfortunate that he passed before this next phase of his extraordinary life. His legacy ~ he put Canada's economical approach on the world map. The Lord has called him home far too early, The Abilities Centre will be an everlasting reminder, not just as a giant of a politician, but as a genuine human being. God be with Jim, Christine, John. It is so untimely and unfair that Mr. James M. Flaherty, one of the most respected and hard-working sons of, and leader to, our nation is gone now, so early… No matter of what political mind, race or creed one might be… we, entire Canada, have inadvertently lost a GENIUS of the pragmatic economic mind; phenomenal manager of our country financial policy, budgets and daily fiscal affairs. Many of us, Canadians, should remember just one thing: it was Jim's brilliance that guided us through one of the worst downtimes in economic history, relatively unscathed! The brightly shining star, in all respects on the global forum. Jim remains the envy of the civilized world, clearly! Always honest and unwavering in unconditional dedication to our beloved country. Tough and sharp as a surgical blade but also humane in business dealings of the greatest consequences, with personal touch and humour. Dedicated husband and father… Deepest regards and condolences to Flaherty Family. We do share your loss and pain… While your dear husband and father [and relative] is no longer with you in his earthly presence, MAY HIS GREAT SPIRIT OF HOPE & FAIRNESS stay with you and always shine the Irish smile, of the TRUE GIANT OF A GOOD MAN, upon you, and all of us. God bless you, RicharD.

A tragic loss for all Canadians. Every year he proposed a budget with new shoes on his feet and a huge smile on his face. He was the man who first got me interested in politics, and in my future I hope to be more like him not just if I have a political future, but on a personal level. During the economic crisis he represented Canada on a international stage and shined, and back here in Canada he brought us through tough times. If he hadn't done what he had during the economic crisis I have no clue where we would be as a country right now. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He may have only been able to relax for a month, but where he is going he can relax for eternity. Rest in peace.

Jim Flaherty. The magic of human life, health, governance, politics, and all other areas of activities, are said to be progressing to better thing! And there are those that believe there is not much more that can be or should be bettered…! I do not believe in peasants or poordom! And Finance Ministers sure do not do much about it! To cut budgets and not give work from Government is as bad as a parent not providing for their children! Budgets are only made but not needed! Limitations of money supply is a mere inferior logic mentality! We all live for ourselves and loved ones. And public servants most surely try and live for others and Canada. The rich have greater self interests that do not benefit most of us. No matter what work you accomplished. No doubt a public servant deserves a State Funeral! I do hope that a country does not get a State funeral! Politics is generally a non grateful job to have, because of bureaucratic negative influences! Condolences to your family and friends!

Mr. Flaherty was a special guest ten years ago at Mrs. Sheila. Morrisons 85th birthday party in Toronto. Mrs. Morrison, was so pleased Mr. Flaherty had actually come, considering the party was a Sunday afternoon. She was sure he'd prefer to be somewhere else. Not only did he show-up, he presented Mrs. Morrison with a plaque of appreciation from the Provincial Government for her 36 years of work, dedication, helping Ontario students and helping the Harris Government with education reforms. Mrs. Morrison, died 2013. She never forgot Mr. Flaherty's kindness and thought the world of him. I too attended the party, I never forgot how gracious and kind he was on that day to our beloved elderly friend. He was the icing on the cake for her and she talked about her special day for years. My heart felt condolences to Mr. Flaherty's wife and sons. He was one of the special ones God put on this earth and gone too soon.

How saddened I was to hear of Mr. Flaherty's untimely death. He truly was a great Canadian and in this country's time of need, led it to be the envy of the International Community. We, as Canadians, owe Mr. Flaherty a debt of gratitude that perhaps we all shall be unable to repay. His legacy to this country will live forever in the annuals of history. My sincere condolences to his family in their hour of sorrow.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to Jim Flaherty's family for their tragic loss. Jim was a truly great Canadian, a pragmatic fiscal conservative, who with Prime Minister Harper's government, was a pillar to, and leader of the world in saving it from economic collapse. By his insight, foresight and courageous examples, Canada became for the first time in its history, an authoritative economic leader of the free world. Au revoir Jim. Fare thee well my friend. We thank you for your exemplary service. Christine, John, Galen and Quinn, thank you for sharing your Jim with us. May God give you comfort.

Our deepest sympathies to Christine, John, Galen and Quinn. Having spent a term with Jim at Queens Park, I witnessed his dedication and commitment to good government. He was a mentor to many of us in the political arena and was indeed the gold standard to which many of us aspired. Jim may have been short in stature, but he cast a long shadow across this country as MPP and MP by maintaining his love of family, conservative ideals and fiscal beliefs. Thank you Jim and may you rest in peace.

I am uncertain as to the significance of any condolences I can provide regarding Jim Flaherty, having neither professional nor political recollections to submit regarding his obvious contributions to Canada. I can only admit to having been his classmate at Loyola High School in Montreal for four years, during which time I observed Jim exhibit many of the exemplary qualities that are now being assigned to him on reflection. He was one of the "fellas", popular almost to the point of veneration, was good humored, did moderately well scholastically although, like most of us, was uncomfortable with the classics, was an exceptional athlete, particularly in hockey, and, except for the occasional memorable feat of mischief, was generally well behaved. When I first became aware of his political success, I was not in the least surprised. I could only conclude then and can only confirm now that he seemed destined for and deserving of the lofty ambitions he ultimately achieved. As a postscript, however, I would note that he seems to have maintained the same hair style, a modified Beaver Cleaver cut, since high school. That too has not changed.

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I was pleased with the manner in which you handled the GST/HST changes. You may not have ever realised it, but I was the one that suggested to Ontario that they adopt the HST so we did cross paths at one point in time. I have heard that you were a wonderful person and it was obvious that you were a fantastic Finance Minister. Condolences to your family.

I am beyond words at this very difficult time. I was saddened to see Jim leave the government, but then absolutely devastated to hear of his sudden passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim at the Parliament buildings in Ottawa before one of the budgets was read. He was rushing, trying to get through the crowds of people who would wait in a reception room before heading to the galleries to sit. He politely shook my hand and smiled as I desperately tried to show my admiration and appreciation for him in just a few words, as there wasn't time to say much. He listened and smiled and I felt so honoured to shake the hand of this wonderful man. I am so very very sorry that Jim and his family will not be able to enjoy his retirement and his better health. Had his health been better, perhaps one day he would have lead this country as a Prime Minister; at least, I always hoped. God Bless you Jim, I know you are looking down and are amazed by the sadness and outpouring of grief from your fellow Canadians. You were a gift to us all, not just Canadians. Christine, Galen, John, and Quinn, God Bless you and thank you all for allowing your husband and dad to lead the economic prosperity of this wonderful country, Canada. Jim Flaherty, always remembered as one of the greatest Canadians in history.

My deepest sympathy to you, the friends and family of Jim Flaherty. It is so hard to lose someone close especially when it is much too early. I, of course, did not know him personally, but unlike many politicians today, he seemed to be involved in public service for all the right reasons. He appeared to be a man who was honest, hard working, and genuinely fought for the good of Canada and its citizens. I feel he deserves a lot of the credit for keeping Canada financially sound through many difficult economic times. From hearing people talking, he certainly had the respect and loyalty of many fellow Canadians. These are not easily earned. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. You and Canada have lost a very special family man, civil servant and citizen.

We were in capable hands while he served our country. sincerely, / judi sutton / Newmarket, On. CANADA

My deepest sympathies to the Flaherty family. You have lost a husband, father, friend and colleague and I can only imagine your sorrow now. I lost my mother a few years ago to cancer so I have a sense of losing someone close to me. Although I did not know him personally, I do know about all the good works he did, not only for Canadians across the country, but also for those people he served in Whitby-Oshawa both provincially and federally. He was also a devoted and tireless community volunteer and supporter, notably helping and championing people with disabilities. He and his wife, Christine were well known in Durham Region for their many causes. Jim - and I feel like we knew him even though we didn't - left us much too soon and it was a shock when I heard the news, which is still hard to believe. I thank him for his many years of service. Somehow that doesn't really seem enough. I am just so sorry we have lost a wonderful man like him.

In borrowing a quote from one of histories greatest men, Abraham Lincoln, he said during the Gettysburg Address that, and I quote, “… we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion”. This is in reference to men who died during war. I choose to use this statement in a different context. From some of the great men in politics who came and went before us, MacDonald, King, St. Laurent, so does Jim Flaherty, who gave his all to the cause, and his full measure of devotion, to the stability of his and our country which he loved and believed in. We should honour his memory by trying to make this country great. There is never enough time, not nearly enough time, to do the things in life that takes decades to accomplish. Jim tried, and succeeded, to put us on the right path to greatness. It is up to us to honor his memory by our increased devotion, going forward, by building a great country. What is the ultimate measure of a man? Martin Luther King describes it as not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. He was more, much more than that. Jim rose to the occasion during the last recession by doing what conventional wisdom said not to do. He steered us out of trouble. He is well respected around the world by many of his contemporaries and be sadly and sorely missed.
Phil Handley

My family and I never met Mr. Flaherty but we admired him immensely. Although we had the misfortune of owning income trusts in our portfolios, we long-forgave him having taken full advantage of tax-free savings accounts. Also, having a child with a disability ourselves, we also really appreciated what Mr. Flaherty has done for disabled children, not mentioning what he did for Canada's economy while so many others went under in 2008. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.
